dream: real estate reconnaisance in jackson w/kristie

We're in what must be the tram at Teton village, given the view of the condos on the hillside, like at the bottom of Laramie Bowl, sort of.

Bob and Ruth Peters along with. (Bob is a local, a realtor, and a backcountry- and JH-guide.)

The condos (which are not actually there) are fine for ski-in/out but not to my liking.

Then we're at a very different property, sprawling single-level ranch, not another residence in sight. Bob and Ruth along, letting us wander on out own.

Minimally elegant home, lots of wood (lighter than darker) and big windows swallowing sunshine.

Unfurnished and sorta sprawling.

Magazine-worthy Sotheby's-type.

Also, a river runs through the property sluicing through gravel bars in fingers of gentle whitewater.

At one point Kristie and I are at a right angle to one another where windows (not yet glassed?) meet over a barrel that has water in it, water roiled at the surface by fish.

Fish in a barrel?

We're pretty happy.

boots 133: Doc 3

INT DOC'S - DAY

Carson and Doc as per usual. Carson has a beard. And is wearing Tom's boots and a western shirt. Jeans.

Doc is writing on his pad of paper, somewhat feverishly. Carson stares into the aquarium.

Doc finishes.

DOC
So while you and Barbara were waiting for Chloe to get home, what did you talk about?

CARSON
Tom. She wanted to know all about Tom. And Wanda.

RINGTONE.

CARSON
Doh. I'm sorry, Doc.

DOC
It's alright.

CARSON
It's Wanda. I'll be quick.

Doc writes.

CARSON(cont'd)
Hey there, is everything okay?

Well, as a matter of fact I am. Can I call you back in half an hour?

Okay.

No worries.

Alright. Talk to you soon.

Bye.

Carson turns off his phone.

CARSON
Sorry.

DOC
You apologized. How is Wanda?

CARSON
Alright. Both of 'em seem okay.

DOC
You'll be staying in touch.

CARSON
Oh yeah. We talk a couple times a day. She's going to sell the place in Laramie, move in with Virginia. I'm going to help her with that.

DOC
Will Chloe ever meet them?

CARSON
Kind of already have. Wanda, anyway. Chloe sent her an email, got the ball rolling.  I'll be down there in November when I'm in Austin, if she's interested I'll fly her out. I suspect she will be.

DOC
I haven't seen those boots before.

CARSON
They're Tom's.

Doc writes.

CARSON
(cont'd) Shirt, too.

DOC
Boots fit?

CARSON
Perfectly.

DOC
You said he wore a hat.

CARSON
It's on his bed. Next to mister whiskers most of the time.

DOC
Funny cat.

CARSON
Something.

Doc writes.

DOC
What else of Tom's did you keep?

CARSON
A few belts, buckles. Bolo ties. Shirts. Wanda gave them to me.

DOC
Alright.

CARSON
Another pair of boots, too. Black.

DOC
Did you keep any of his ashes?

CARSON
Yes. They're in urn on my desk. Chloe has some, too. She's going to put them in the ocean when she goes surfing tomorrow.

Doc writes, stops.

DOC
Will I see you next week?

CARSON
(two beats) As far as I know.

DOC
(writing) Of course.

Carson sits up. Doc finishes writing.

CUT TO:

Chloe's phone in her hand. Video she's shot.  Tom walking his horse to Rosemarie's trailer at the trailhead. "Dad calling."

Wide as Chloe touches the screen and  moves the phone to her ear. She's in her room. Lit by the moon over Madonna Mountain in the window.

CHLOE
Hey pop.

Watching some of what I shot with my phone.

Tom loading his horse into Rosemarie's trailer.

Nope, just me.

Concert in Paso Robles.

I don't even remember, some band from your guys' era.

So what's the haps in Texas?

Really? What flavor?

Hey, you're fave, how 'bout that?

No way. More weird.

I am. Our talk helped. Thanks again.

I love you too. So are you gonna hang there awhile or what?

CARSON'S ROOM AT VIRGINIA'S

Carson on phone. Open suitcase on bed. Pad of paper with writing on it and pen on the desk. Open door to hallway.

CARSON
We're going to breakfast tomorrow,  then I'm going to rent a car and drive home.

Not so much. It's two hours to Austin, add another waiting for a flight. Then an hour-and-half to El Paso, then a ride from there.

Exactly. Besides, it's an easy drive and the speed limit's eighty.

HALLWAY.

Wanda, in robe and slippers, down the hallways from the door to Carson's room. She's listening.

CARSON
(o.s.) I don't know, I'm thinking about maybe taking the back roads home. I've got a friend in Lubbock I may surprise, then come back home through Roswell.

Jackie is feeding Mister Whiskers.

Well, she enjoyed your company too and I'll tell her you said that.

Okay punkin.

CARSON

Surfing tomorrow?

Where?

Who'll be there?.

Who's driving?

Okay.

Love you too.

'Night.

He sets the phone down. The CREAKING OF A BOARD in the hallway turns his attention to the doorway right before Wanda appears.

Hello there.

WANDA
Hello.

CARSON
Come on in.

WANDA
Alright.

She enters.

(cont'd) Was that Chloe on the phone?

CARSON
Yeah. Our nightly goodnight.

WANDA
That's sweet.

CARSON
You look like you have something on your mind.

WANDA
Well. I do.

CARSON
Sit. Please.

She does, on the edge of the bed.

WANDA
It's about the truck.

CARSON
(beat) Alright. What about it?

EXT CAFE - DAY

The truck and Virginia's car side by side in the parking lot.

Wanda and Virginia and Carson come out of the café.

Goodbyes and see you soons and emails.

Carson drives the truck away.

Virginia and Wanda in the rear view.

REVERSE. Carson driving the truck out of view around a bend.

JACKIE AND CARSON EL PASO AIRPORT PARKING

She's picked him up. He talks about delayed flight re: San Francisco to Vegas.

A kiss at her car.

I'm standing, oration mode, speaking to what seems like maybe eight or ten or so people seated around a table.

I'm trying to find a way to fir the notion of being "Born Free" into biblical context.

and/or trying to maybe find such a reference in the bible.

at any rate, I'm at a loss, stumped. really not quite sure where to go with it and finally accepting I am not remotely sure enough of whatever I'm trying to "message" to continue, so I stop, sit down.

JQ is there, too, and at one point I note she's been staring at me.

I say hi. she says hi, bob.

EXT FRONT PORCH - NIGHT

[Describe.]

Audio.

------------------

VIRGINIA
Carson, I sure hope we'll see you again. The door is always open.

CARSON
Oh you will. Matter of fact, I was thinking, I'm going to be in Austin for a few days in November, I'll have a car, I know at least one of those days will be free, I'll drive out.

WANDA
That would be wonderful.

VIRGINIA
It sure would.

WANDA
It wouldn't be an inconvenience?

CARSON
Please. It's what, a two-hour drive.

VIRGINIA
Right about, you take two-ninety.

CARSON
I might have my girlfriend with me.

VIRGINIA
I'd love to meet her.

WANDA
Tom said she brought along a movie camera the day y'all went to Ruidoso.

CARSON
She did. I have a feeling there might be a DVD at some point. You'll get a copy.

WANDA
I would like that very much.

CARSON
I don't know if you checked. Or if you'd want to. But I'm pretty sure there's video on Tom's phone.

Wanda's eyes light up. We can almost see the light bulb over her head. She is up out of the swing and heading toward the screen door.

WANDA
I know for a fact there is. He told me. Be right back.

Wanda enters the house, the screen softly shutting behind her.

VIRGINIA
Oh boy. Movie night.

CARSON
Doh.

VIRGINIA
What is it?

Carson takes his phone out of his pocket.

CARSON
I've got some on my phone.

VIRGINIA
Doh.

Carson brings up a video, walks to the swing and stands behind it, near Virginia.

CARSON
Here we go.

He hands her his phone. Wanda comes out with Tom's, and her glasses and Virginia's.  Virginia smiles.

VIRGINIA
Carson has some, too. Oh thank you.

Virginia puts on her glasses. Wanda sits down next to Virginia, puts on her glasses, Carson over their shoulders, all eyes on Carson's phone in Virginia's hands.

VIRGINIA
Press play?

CARSON
Press play.

We hear TOM'S VOICE as we did before when he handed the truck keys to Chloe in the front seat at the steering wheel.

TOM
(o.s.) Alrighty then. Start 'er up.

We hear the diesel come to life.

CLOSE ON CARSON'S PHONE.

POV through the front passenger's side window aimed at:

Chloe behind the wheel, Tom outside the driver's side door, head in the window, smiling. Chloe turns to Carson, smiling.

TOM
Go 'head and give her a little.

Chloe steps on it. The diesel pings and gargles.

CHLOE
Why does it sound different?

TOM
That's your Cummins diesel.

CHLOE
(beat) Oh.

CLOSE ON CARSON, WANDA, VIRGINIA

They smile. We hear the diesel idle.

CHLOE'S ROOM - NIGHT

Friday, February 26, 2016

Dear Nicole

Yes, much I-Ching, for sure, beginning a few years ago and corresponding not so coincidentally with the end of a long-term relationship.

Other than that I have over that same span of time been working on a few screenplays, one of which, called Boots, I am maybe a month-and-a-half from completing, finally. By the time you read this you will likely have discovered pieces of it here on this blog. It has to do with a 70-something father meeting his 50-something son for the first time.

I remember your red 325i.

UC Santa Barbara. Art History.

Your father was a CPA.

Lemon Heights, right? That general 'hood, anyway.

I remember a goodnight kiss one night outside my place in South Pasadena, a memorable kiss made more so because while "Nikki," one of your Gemini twins, was quite receptive, Nicole was a little scared. You/she referred to me as "dangerous."

Actually, our only kiss.

I looked you up and found you a few years ago, seen that you'd married and that you had not let the Artist in you evaporate. I have this feeling that the fellow who showed up at your place on The Island
the last time I was there is the fellow you married. At any rate, I knew that was my cue to leave the stage.

I live downtown and have for a long time. I work right next to MOCA but it's been at least 15 years since I walked in.

Thank you so much for writing, Nicole. You brought a smile to my face today.

XO,

B

Um... So HI! I'd love to wax poetic or pithy... Say something profound. But fact of the matter is I just wanted to say hello. Within the last year, my parents moved... Attics cleared. My boxes dumped into my already over-crowded garage. I have yet to go through most. But one collapsed and journals arose recently. Several contained letters, cards and the like pasted inside. (I am a horrible pack-rat). These particular books were circa early '90s... and many/most of the actual letters were from you. Based on what I have seen on this blog... and the one photo I saw, I am sure I have found the illustrious Bob to whom used to write as if he were Griffin and show up periodically on the island to visit. Is it not you? And how are you? And besides obviously doing quite a bit of I Ching... what are you up to? Anyway... I have thought of you through the years and always wondered... Did he publish? Where is he?

Hope this finds you well and happy. All my best...

it isn't like

it isn't like she doesn't know what cold is.
it isn't like she won't shovel snow.
it isn't like she's afraid of what old is.
it isn't like she doesn't know

to plant as the moon has guided for ages,
to dance when the music calls her to the floor,
to cry when grief walks her through stages
of letting go of what isn't there anymore.

it isn't like she hasn't seen my dark side.
it isn't like she'll forget where we've been.
it isn't like she the thinks it's always a smooth ride.
it isn't like she hasn't seen

flood and avalanche, earthquake and fire,
the shapes of loved ones outlined by white chalk
directly below where they fell off the wire.

it isn't like she's afraid of the dark.
it isn't like she won't get down and dirty.
it isn't like she won't leave a mark.
it isn't like she won't get dressed up pretty

boots 126: The River FINAL

[from Jackie's editing room, FADE UP SOUND OF RIVER]
----------------------

EXT RIVER - DAY

Guadalupe River at Brinks Crossing in Kerrville, Texas.

A leisurely and shallowish stretch of green water lined by foliage, most prominently the Cypress trees along the banks. A swing-rope dangles from a limb a few feet above where the river pools.

Occassional cricket chirp and whir of cicadas and the sluicing of the water around and over things, including the feet, ankles and legs of Wanda, Virginia and Carson, standing mid-stream.

Wanda and Virginia, shorts and blouses and hats, face downstream, each with an urn in hand, facing Carson, jeans rolled up to knees, facing them from several feet directly downriver.

Shoes and purses on the gravel beach.

VIRGINIA
Carson, do you know where the Guadalupe goes?

CARSON
To the Gulf of Mexico at San Antonio Bay.

WANDA
Well aren't you mister smartypants?

 CARSON
No, I am not. I looked it up.

VIRGINIA
Have you ever been to the Gulf?

CARSON
I have not. I guess you have.

VIRGINIA
We would - Ruth and I - would go down every couple years or so. We had some friends with a condo on South Padre Island.

CARSON
I've seen pictures. Looks nice.

VIRGINA
It is. Change of scenery.

Carson sees something shoot by in the water.

CARSON
Hey there.

VIRGINA
What is it?

CARSON
Fish.

VIRGINIA
Plenty of 'em.

WANDA
Last time we was down Tom musta caught a half-dozen.

CARSON
When was that?

WANDA
Oh golly, it's been, what, eight, nine years? I know it was May.

VIRGINIA
Nine. I was thinking about that last night.

WANDA
That was a good week.

VIRGINIA
Yes it was.

WANDA
Did Tom talk about fishing at all?

Carson shakes his head.

CARSON
He caught them here?

VIRGINA
No. We have some friends with a piece of property downriver some. Last time Tom and Wanda came down we went over for dinner. Tom didn't know he would be fishing for it.

WANDA
Did a pretty good job.

VIRGINIA
I'll say.

CARSON
Who cleaned and cooked?

VIRGINA/WANDA
Tom.

WANDA
Go 'head.

VIRGINIA
No, you.

WANDA
No, you.

CARSON
What kind of fish?

WANDA
Perch. Some call 'em sunfish. Cornmeal batter. Drop 'em in the pan, fry 'em right up.

VIRGINIA
I know there are pictures of that day, too, somewhere.

The sun comes out from behind cloudcover.

WANDA
Here comes the sun.

VIRGINIA
And seems like ten degrees hotter right with it.

WANDA
It is a little sticky, ain't it.

VIRGINA
Well.

WANDA
Well.

VIRGINIA
Let's do this.

WANDA
Let's.

Carson pulls his phone from his pocket, aims it like a camera at Wanda and Virginia as they remove the caps from the urns, put them in pants pockets, lean down to lower the urns to the river.

VIRGINIA
Are you recording this, Carson?

CARSON
Rolling.

The women pour some of the ashes into the river, stand and watch the current take it toward Carson, who records as they flow by and around him. He turns and follows the ashes downriver as Wanda and Virginia wade closer to him until near his side.

Carson puts his phone back and assists Wanda and Virginia in recapping the urns.

Each woman puts her urn in the crook of her elbow and uses her free hand to take one of Carson's when he extends them for support. They linger awhile, as if unsure what to do next.

CARSON
Are we ready for that drive?

Wanda nods. Virginia nods. Carson walks them to the bank.

VIRGINIA
Carson, when's the last time you had homemade ice cream?

CARSON
Oh, approximately never.

WANDA
Really?

CARSON
Truly.

VIRGINIA
Well you're in for a treat tonight because there's still some of Ruth's.

WANDA
Oh boy.

VIRGINIA
I hope you're okay with peach.

CARSON
My favorite.

WANDA
No.

CARSON
No?

VIRGINIA
Well how 'bout that?

WANDA
Peach was Tom's favorite too.

boots 125: [from kitchen table to] JACKIE EDITING

INT HOME EDITING ROOM - NIGHT

Small space, converted closet, no window.  Film festival poster. Framed photograph of film production still. Other cinematic knick-knacks.

Shelf populated by various old-style cameras, lenses, gadgets, etc.

Desk where Jackie, in fashionable sweats,  is seated, headphones on, editing on a laptop some of the footage she shot at White Sands.

She progresses frame-by-frame through a shot of Tom and Carson and Chloe, each wearing sunglasses, lined up like dominoes with the dunes behind them, all turning to face her camera almost simultaneously. When they face her, she stops, rewinds, then plays forward in super slo-mo.

When they are facing the camera, we hear her PHONE VIBRATE. Jackie pauses the action with Carson and Tom and Chloe all aimed at the camera. She checks her phone, takes off her headphones, brings her phone to her ear.

JACKIE
Hey you.

I'm at White Sands.

No, actually I'm going through what I shot that day.

Yeah. What are you up to?

INT BEDROOM - NIGHT

Guest room. Open door to hallway. Open door to bathroom. Chair at desk at window. Carson's suitcase on the floor next to a chair. Carson on the bed, shoes off , phone to his ear.

CARSON
I am in my assigned room, about to go to bed.

Well, introductions, of course, a tour. We went to dinner.

I had fried catfish, cornbread, black-eyed peas, mashed potatoes and a salad.

A brief tour of Kerrville then back here where we sat around the table and got to know each other a little better.

They went to bed about an hour ago.

Up in the morning and down to the river. After that I believe I we may go for a drive.

Not sure, just kind of playing it by the breeze.

Rain and thunder and lightning.

Yeah, something up from the Gulf of Mexico. Supposed to break around sunrise.

They seem alright, all things considered. I'm glad they have each other. They're glad they have each other.

I plan on taking a few tomorrow. Okay, then, I reckon I'll letcha get on back to White Sands.

Okay. You too.

Goodnight.

Carson lays his phone on the bed, sits in silence but for the rain tapping the window.

boots 123: VIRGINIA'S DINING ROOM TABLE

INT DINING ROOM - NIGHT

Carson and Virginia and Wanda around the round wooden table, points of triangulation under the chandelier.

Carson and Virginia have glasses of red wine. Wanda nurses a cup of tea, a butterfly tab at the end of the string to the bag. A large circular candle on a stand in the middle of the table, near the urn Carson had brought in and another next to it.

A box of tissues between Wanda and Virginia.

A wood and glass cupboard featuring fine dishware.

A grandfather clock softly keeps time.

Lithograph of Georgia O' Keefe's Apple Family I on the opposite wall.

View through to the handsome kitchen, bottle of wine on the center island.

The curtains to the big window are opened wide, night's black smeared against the glass by constant rain.

The occasional clap of THUNDER.

VIRGINIA
I'm curious, Carson, how did Tom describe our relationship? Mine and Ruth's, I mean.

CARSON
He said you were partners.

Virginia smiles.

VIRGINIA
And you understood what that meant.

CARSON
Not with certainty. I asked if you were lovers, too.

VIRGINIA
And he said?

CARSON
Nothing. He nodded.

Wanda and Virginia smile.

VIRGINIA
Anything else?

CARSON
He mentioned the wedding.

WANDA
That was a wonderful day.

CARSON
There must be pictures.

VIRGINIA
Oh there are pictures.

CARSON
He didn't tell me how you met.

VIRGINIA
We met on a faculty kayaking trip through Guadalupe River State Park. That's about an hour southeast of here.

CARSON
What faculty?

VIRGINIA
Oh. Texas State, in San Marcos. Back then it was called Southwest Texas State.

CARSON
Who taught what?

VIRGINIA
I was in the Math Department. Ruth taught History. Maybe Tom told you that.

CARSON
No. I don't know much about Ruth.

VIRGINIA
I can catch you up a little, if that's something you might be interested in.

CARSON
Very much so. Thank you.

WANDA
Did he happen to mention how we met?

CARSON
A-A meeting in Boise.

Both Wanda and Virginia have a good spontaneous laugh, which Carson studies.

CARSON
(cont'd) I did ask.

WANDA
Oh my.

CARSON
But not much beyond that.  It was pretty much an introduction to an introduction.

WANDA
I'd be more'n happy to help with any questions you might have.

CARSON
You'll get tired of my questions.

Wanda shakes her head.

WANDA
No I won't.

A flash of LIGHTNING coincides with THUNDER.

VIRGINIA
Storm's supposed to have passed over by sunrise.

WANDA
I thought we might head down to the river earlier than later, before it gets too hot.

VIRGINIA
That's a good idea. Ready to get your feet wet, Carson?

CARSON
I am.

VIRGINIA
Alright. Well, I  believe I am ready for bed.

WANDA
I'll be right behind you.

They rise, as does Carson.

CARSON
Goodnight, ladies.

He comes around to embrace each of them.

WANDA
Goodnight, Carson.

VIRGINIA
Are you a night-owl, Carson?

CARSON
Not at all, this is about my bedtime. I'm going to call my girlfriend then lights out for me too.

VIRGINIA
Jackie.

CARSON
Jackie.

VIRGINIA
There. I haven't completely lost my memory. Yet.

WANDA
I showed Virginia some of the pictures of the day on horseback.

VIRGINIA
Oh my goodness, what a glorious day that looked like.

CARSON
It was.

WANDA
You should have heard the tone in his voice when he called that night. So...happy. (Beat.) Alright, off to bed.

She kisses Carson on the cheek, a hug with Virginia. She leaves into kitchen, out of view.

VIRGINIA
Now Carson if you're not comfortable with the bed there is the other room, and that mattress is a little softer.

CARSON
I already tested it, I prefer firm, I'm going to sleep like a baby with this rain.

VIRGINIA
Alright. Goodnight.

CARSON
Goodnight, Virginia.

She leaves into kitchen, stops, turns to face him.

VIRGINIA
It's extraordinary that you're here. Thank you.

CARSON
Thank you. It's my pleasure.

She nods, leaves view.

VIRGINIA
(o.s.) I'm going to turn off the kitchen light.

CARSON
Okay.

The kitchen light goes on.

VIRGINIA
(o.s.) But there's a night light in the hall.

CARSON
Okay.

Carson sits down, finishes his wine, fiddles with his glass, finally sets it down. Does the grandfather clock sound louder now?

EXT GUADALUPE RIVER - DAY

ashes, ashes.

dream: party

modern home, lots of light wood and light in through lots of glass.

situated, it seemed, at the northern end of the silver lake reservoir.

I don't see a lot of people, or don't remember doing so, and at some point I am outside on the deck - with a glass of wine? - that is almost on the reservoir.

maybe it is.

I do have something to do with the party, the details of which I am not so sure of.

a hunch, but that is all.

boots 121: beats from CARSON/TOM'S TRUCK to ARRIVE VIRGINIA'S

[FROM: Carson/Tom's truck]
------------------------------------

1. Virginia's. Day. Wanda and Virginia in a bedroom, poring over pictures, remembering. Wanda's phone rings. She picks it up, checks the number.

That's him.

She takes the call.

Hello there.

Virginia and I are going over old photographs. Where are you?

Okay. How's the truck doing?

Well, good. He stayed on top of it, that's for sure.

Alright, we'll be here. Drive safe.

Okay. Thanks for calling.

See you soon. You should be just in time for the storm.

Well good 'cause we're supposed to get plenty.

You too.

Bye.

She ends the call, puts her phone down.

He just crossed the Pecos.

They stare at each other, clasp hands.

2. Carson filling up at a diesel station with a mini-mart. After doing so he raises the hood to check the oil. Newish hoses, Shiny clamps. Carson nods his approval, closes the hood, gets in the truck, starts it up, on the road again.

3. Chloe's room. She and Barbara looking at Chloe's laptop. Chloe scans through photos taken on the horseback ride.

BARBARA
He looks like a real cowboy.

CHLOE
He was.

Barbara rubs Chloe's back.

BARBARA
It looks like it was an incredible day.

Chloe nods, sniffles.

CHLOE
Jackie shot a lot of video. I think there's going to be a youtube.

BARBARA
Oh I hope so.

CHLOE
Me too.

They arrive at a picture of Tom on horseback on the Crest Trail. He is alone in the frame with the peaks and basin beyond, gazing out.

BARBARA
Great picture. That's the Crest Trail.

CHLOE:
(nods) I'm going to posterize it, like with a painting effect, oil I think, and send it to Wanda.

BARBARA
What a beautiful idea. I know someone who would be happy to do that for you.

Chloe looks at her. Barbara winks.

CHLOE
I know you're busy.

BARBARA
Are you kidding, there's nothing to it. And I would truly enjoy it.

CHLOE
Thanks.

Chloe hugs her. They embrace. Chloe starts to cry. Barbara rocks her.

BARBARA
Cry, sweetheart. It's good for you.

CHLOE
(muffled in mom's embrace, but clear)
I hate my damn period.

Barbara smiles.

4. Carson driving slowly down a leafy residential avenue, quiet. A lot of brick, flagstone; it is a single-level red brick house's driveway he turns into.

5. Virginia and Wanda are asleep in rocking chairs in a kind of simple but warm parlor room. A CRACK OF THUNDER wakes them both. Then the GURGLE OF THE DIESEL ENGINE, nearing, passing, then turned off. They both rise from their rockers and leave the room.

6. INT TOM'S TRUCK.  Carson sits at the wheel, parked in the carport next to a hybrid sedan. He doesn't move for awhile before finally picking up the urn, getting out, closing the door, walking out of frame.

7. Virginia's front porch.  Wanda and Virginia stand at the screen door, nervous hens, holding hands. We hear the CRUNCH OF CARSON'S SHOES before he arrives at the porch steps. Carson stares at them, they stare back.

[CUT TO KITCHEN TABLE NIGHT]

boots 120: CARSON/TOM'S TRUCK EDIT AND FINAL

(I Forgot) TOM'S HAT.

Carson wears it out of the house, sets it on his own suitcase on the rear passenger bench seat.

And he lingers, takes in the truck, sniffs. Checks the glove compartment. Pulls out an unlabeled CD in a clear case. Sets it on Tom's suitcase.

He starts the engine, listens to the diesel gurgle. He rolls down the windows and adjusts the mirrors, sliding across the seat to get the passenger side first, then the rear view, then the driver's side. He rolls up the passenger side window.

He plugs in the CD, presses play.

Don Williams and Emmylou Harris singing Townes Van Zandt's If I Needed You .

He clicks it off at "for to ease my pain."

His eyes well. He takes his sunglasses from his shirt pocket, puts them on. He shifts into drive, makes the U-turn and drives the down out of view.
